'PowerHub' Grid Control Technology


For energy grids running on renewables that generate power based on the inconsistent environmental factors such as wind, it's important to take extra measures to secure and stabilize the power system. Otherwise, energy shortages can lead to power blackouts, which can be often be economically crippling. The PowerHub grid control system allows for a computer to take control of critical energy junctures and prevent overloading of the system during times of low energy production. By temporarily shutting off the power (for seconds at a time) at industrial sites that use up a large percentage of the entire grid's supply, blackouts can be avoided. All of this is done automatically and it ready to be implemented immediately 24/7.

    A great use case of this technology is occurring in the Faroe Islands, where wind power makes up the majority of the island's energy supply. Although the island is frequently windy, this natural resource of not entirely predictable. Even more, it's most windy on the islands during the night, and most energy is used during the day. Finally, the island has a small group of businesses that can at times use something like 30% of the entire energy supply. One of these businesses is Kollafjord Pelagic, which is one of the world’s largest and most advanced processing facilities for human-consumption pelagic fish. It runs 4200 kW cooling compressors that have the potential to blackout the entire grid if energy supply is low enough. The PowerHub system senses when these moments are imminent and very temporarily suspends the facility's draw on the grid in a way that is not detrimental on it's activities. Doing so greatly reduces the risk of a blackout. Both island residents and the industrial operations avoid a potentially economically damaging event.
