Accelerating the Transition to a Deforestation Free Economy
This solution addresses deforestation driven by market forces in tropical forest regions (particularly Indonesia, Amazonia) for global industry "powerbrokers"
Problem Description
The solution captures the work of the Global Canopy Programme (GCP), a tropical forest think tank aimed at forging a path for economic growth that puts a halt to deforestation. GCP believes strongly that forests act as natural capital that is vital to our wellbeing. When we practice deforestation, we put at risk risk the security of our access to water, food, energy, health, and the climate. GCP's goal is to demonstrate the scientific, political and business case for stopping deforestation and safeguarding this natural capital. It's acts as a force of recognition, fixing the failure of the market to value important connections to the benefits of forest heath.Building Blocks
Story
Since GCP was founded in 2001, it has implemented a number of programs and flagship projects all working towards the goal of inspiring forest-friendly economic growth. GCP acts as a incubator of these projects which span over 5 strategic categories: science, communities, policy, business, and finance. The deliverables of each project vary greatly-- from online accounting tool, to reports and reference books. Over the next 5 years GCP will help support the commitments made by governments, major corporations and financial institutions to rid their supply chains of deforestation by 2020. Based out of the UK, GCP is a charitable company limited by guarantee that is financially supported mainly by foundations.
Sustainable Development Goals
On September 25th 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years. This solution covers the following goals:
